OnTrack Tasmania’s Inclusive Programs Offer Opportunities for Capacity Building

OnTrack Tasmania is proud to announce the expansion of its Making Tracks programs to provide more opportunities for people living with a disability to develop essential skills. Operating in southern Tasmania, the registered NDIS provider is now offering music classes five days a week with the cooking and art programs set to expand soon.

The music program is led by Pradeep who brings with him a wealth of knowledge and passion for music. The program provides a platform for participants to express themselves and build their skills in music. It offers a variety of musical instruments and resources available at its music studio, including guitar, drums, piano, singing and songwriting. The program is designed to be inclusive, and weekly reviews are conducted to track progress and review learning plans.

The cooking program, led by Ashish, a highly qualified chef from Nepal, will be expanding to four days a week. Ashish has structured the classes to be informative and engaging, aiming to develop basic and advanced cooking skills, including food handling, mixing ingredients, baking, cooking, communication in the kitchen and teamwork. Participants receive a briefing on what they will be making on the day before proceeding to learn how to prepare ingredients, chop, cook, serve, and clean up. The program emphasises the importance of cooking, cleaning, and hygiene, and teaches participants how to cook different foods safely and effectively.

OnTrack Tasmania recently hired an additional art program leader, Billy, to expand the program to five days a week. Billy has over 13 years of experience in mural art, textile design and graphic design. He has a diverse skill set and is proficient in different painting and drawing styles, materials, and techniques such as sketching, gouache, decorative painting, fashion illustration, tie-dyeing, batik art and embroidery. The program is designed to be welcoming and supportive, tailored to the needs and goals of each participant and focused on building connections, fostering socialisation and boosting confidence.

OnTrack Tasmania’s expanded programs are designed to provide NDIS participants with opportunities to develop essential life skills, express themselves, and experience a sense of accomplishment. The programs are inclusive, accessible, and led by talented and passionate program leaders. Other capacity-development programs include Sports, Digital Literacy, Gaming, Karaoke, Movie Nights, Social Nights, Social Barbecues and Young Guns Lunches. Officially in the driver’s seat

Imagine having the freedom to go wherever you want, at whatever time and with whomever you want to travel with. It sounds nice, right? Jacob had this exact thought when he first entertained the idea of getting a driver’s licence. He recently got his P plates realising his long-term goal of obtaining a driver’s licence.

Jacob is a 20-year-old OnTrack Tasmania participant who has been with the company since the very beginning. He is supported to access the community to participate in activities of interest. Jacob likes rap music, cars, gaming, motorbikes, BMX bikes, action movies, fishing, playing pool at RSL and football. He attends the Making Tracks music sessions to rap and the Young Guns lunch.

Quade is an OnTrack Tasmania staff member who worked with Jacob for over two years. He describes Jacob as a shy individual who can take his time to warm up to someone but once he becomes comfortable, he is jovial, funny and likes to poke fun at his friends and himself. Quade inspired Jacob to get a driver’s licence to enable him to have more control over his life. Jacob was up to it and put in over 50 hours to realise the goal.

As soon as Jacob passed his online test, he booked a driving test with RACT. However, on the day of his test, he was not allowed to take the test due to not having the declaration signed by all his instructors. This upset Jacob and crushed his motivation and during this time his license expired. Quade encouraged Jacob and worked with him across three shifts to help him with the theory test and although Jacob got distracted many times and attempted to give up and play PlayStation, he eventually sat the test and passed.

Jacob passed his driving test in the first instance. He was elated and couldn’t keep a smile off his face. “Jacob attempted to tell me he failed but a smile quickly broke through and his cover was blown,” Quade said. His driving assessor was impressed and congratulated Jacob and he was straight on the phone to his mother with the exciting news. When asked what contributed to the success Jacob said, ”Quade, an interest to drive cars and wanting to be a safe driver.” Quade was happy to see Jacob’s hard work finally pay off. “I was wrapped for Jacob and could tell how much it meant to him, although I never doubted him as his driving ability is very impressive,” he said.

Jacob celebrated the milestone with two beers at his house. He has purchased a car and is in the process of getting it registered. He cannot wait to drive himself to Devonport to kick another goal off his list. Jacob also wants to be supported to get a job. His message to people with disabilities with a similar goal is to keep trying and never give up.

Jacob is grateful to OnTrack Tasmania for supporting him to achieve his goals. He has become a better pool player and is ready to start looking for a job.

A day in the life of Gerard

OnTrack Tasmania participants are individuals who are eligible for support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and they come from all walks of life. One such participant is Gerard Dixon, a 44-year-old man who resides in an OnTrack Tasmania Supported Independent Living (SIL) property in the Sandy Bay suburb of Hobart. Gerard is an infectiously happy person and SIL Team Leader Mark describes Gerard as “Always up for a chat with the best mood”.

OnTrack Tasmania, with Gerard’s NDIS funding, provide the supports he needs and to live a highly independent life. Gerard attends the Young Guns lunch regularly. This is an opportunity for Gerard to call and organise his own taxi ride to attend the venue, wherever the Young Guns lunch is being held that week.

OnTrack Tasmania has been supporting Gerard to live independently for a year and the supports he has received through the NDIS has been life changing. Gerard described his support staff as “nice people.” The funding he receives provides for everything Gerard needs to live an independent life. He enjoys the simple elements of that independence like going to buy groceries for him to make his own food which includes a good dessert like the occasional apple pie and ice-cream after dinner.

He enjoys taking part in sports like basketball and grip ball. Gerard also enjoys helping in the community by volunteering two days a week to hand out magazines at the local hospital. Gerard also travels to Montrose to attend church every Sunday. On days that he doesn’t go out, Gerard enjoys staying home and watching action movies such as Mission Impossible starring Tom Cruise and classic 90’s comedy shows like Friends and Seinfeld on Netflix.

When asked if there were any goals he would like to achieve with OnTrack Tasmania, he replied that he is pretty comfortable with all the supports provided to him but he would like to learn the saxophone. With the help from the NDIS and OnTrack Tasmania, Gerard can live an independent and happy life communicating with his community.

Participants like Gerard are a testament to the importance of services like OnTrack Tasmania in assisting to provide the support participants need to live an independent lifestyle, pursue goals and to be a part of their communities.
